South Carolina is famous for its "free windshield" law, but things are about to change. Here’s the breakdown of House Bill 4817 (The Insurance Rate Reduction and Policyholder Protection Act): The "Good News" First: The automatic zero-deductible (free) windshield replacement is staying exactly as it is through December 31, 2026. The 2027 Shift: Starting January 1, 2027, this benefit won’t be automatic. You’ll need to "opt-in" to it, likely for a small extra premium. The Safety Net: A Senate amendment caps windshield deductibles at $100, so even if you don't opt-in, you won't be hit with a massive out-of-pocket bill. The Goal: This shift aims to reduce insurance fraud and help lower overall auto insurance premiums across the state. At VP Insurance Services, we’re already tracking these changes for you. We’ll make sure your coverage stays exactly where it needs to be when the new rules take effect.
